Dr. Afshan A. Ahmad is a board-certified radiologist specializing in abdominal and pelvic medical imaging with a focus on advanced genitourinary imaging. She interprets imaging across multiple modalities, including CT, ultrasound, and MRI, with particular expertise in advanced MRI applications for complex urologic disease.
She currently serves as Medical Director of MRI at Virginia Urology, where she built the MRI program from the ground up and developed specialized imaging protocols across a wide spectrum of genitourinary conditions. Her clinical expertise includes MRI for prostate cancer detection and staging, renal tumor characterization, penile disease, female urethral evaluation, and pelvic floor dysfunction. She is particularly engaged in advancing imaging techniques that improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making in complex urologic disease.
Dr. Ahmad was named a Top Doctor in Virginia (2026) by Virginia Business. She previously held faculty appointments at UVA Health, where she launched a genitourinary imaging program, served as Fellowship Director, and contributed to national education through invited lectures. She also served three years as Chief Resident at NYU Health.
She earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University. She also holds an Executive MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where she was awarded the Forte Fellowship, a prestigious scholarship recognizing leadership and commitment to advancing women in business.
