Dr. Pennington grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from Harvey Mudd College and earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. During medical school, he performed laboratory research at the National Cancer Institute and completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge. He completed his surgical intern year at Vanderbilt and radiation oncology residency at UCLA, where he served as chief resident.
His practice philosophy is to offer patients the highest standard of care, while putting the goals and values of the patient first.
Dr. Pennington is board-certified in radiation oncology. His practice encompasses comprehensive management of adult solid tumors, with an emphasis on genitourinary, lung, and central nervous system cancers, radiosurgery, brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy in both curative and palliative settings.
He is active in clinical research, serving as a Principal Investigator for Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium NCORP, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute to provide clinical trial access to community oncology patients across six southeastern states, including Virginia. He also serves on the Genitourinary Cancer Core Committee of NRG Oncology, which develops and conducts nationwide and international clinical trials for genitourinary cancers, including prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers.
He is an active member of the American Brachytherapy Society and the Richmond Academy of Medicine.
He played club lacrosse at Harvey Mudd and at Cambridge. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his children, CrossFit, live music, and cooking.
