Virginia Urology is proud to announce that Dr. David Miller has been designated as a Center of Excellence for the AMS 800™ Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) – a long-term treatment option for men living with stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Male stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the leakage of urine during everyday activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting. Unrelated to psychological stress, SUI occurs when the urinary sphincter — the muscle that controls urine flow — becomes weakened. One of the most common causes of SUI is treatment for prostate cancer, such as prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate) or radiation therapy. Research shows that about 1 in 10 men continue to experience leakage one year after prostatectomy.
The Center of Excellence designation recognizes Virginia Urology’s clinical experience with the AMS 800 AUS and its ongoing commitment to patient education and community awareness about SUI and available treatment options.
“Being designated as an AMS 800 Center of Excellence is an important recognition for us and further supports our efforts to educate SUI patients and provide therapy awareness in the Richmond area,” said Dr. David Miller, Urologist at Virginia Urology. “Around 1 in 10 U.S. men suffer from urinary incontinence, and with rates rising for those over age 60, it’s an all-too-common condition. One treatment option, the AMS 800, is designed to mimic the function of a healthy urinary sphincter by closing off the urethra to stop the flow of urine, allowing patients to urinate when desired.”
The AMS 800™ Artificial Urinary Sphincter is considered the gold standard treatment for male stress urinary incontinence, with more than 50 years of clinical use and over 235,000 systems implanted worldwide.
