Highly focused acoustical pressure waves can reach deep into the penile tissue which will stimulate the body’s healing process. During the healing process your body’s regenerative process begins. New blood vessels are formed, which will increase blood flow to the penis. This may result in improved ability to get and maintain an erection. Our sexual health doctors have been watching the literature since 2012 to find acceptable data on this therapy prior to offering this therapy to our patients.
If you have mild ED and you cannot or do not want to take medication, your doctor may recommend focused wave therapy.
Focused wave therapy is a treatment where low intensity focused shock waves are applied to the side of the penis. These focused waves can reach deep into the tissue which will stimulate the body’s healing process. During the healing process, regeneration begins and new blood vessels are formed, which increase blood flow to the penis. This may result in improved ability to get and maintain an erection.
ED is a common sexual disorder. Men affected by ED have consistent trouble with achieving and maintaining an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. The condition can have physical or psychological causes on one or both partners. One of the major causes of ED is vascular, where the penis does not get enough blood flow to obtain an erection.
We chose the DuoLith machine because it was the machine that has been researched and used by urologists to treat ED in the studies. The DuoLith emits a unique set of focused acoustic pressure waves that stimulate metabolism and enhance blood circulation. This machine is a Class III device which means that the FDA has general controls and a rigorous pre-market approval in place.
There are many types of machines marketed to treat ED. These machines may be class I medical devices, where FDA pre-market approval is not needed. These machines are used to treat various conditions such as plantar fasciitis and shoulder pain. Most machines available do not emit powerful enough acoustic pressure waves to properly penetrate the penile tissue.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been used for the treatment of vascular erectile dysfunction since 2010. During treatment, low-intensity shock waves are applied to different areas of the penis. This stimulates the creation of new blood vessels that help to improve blood flow within the penis to achieve a firmer erection.
The treatment is simple and painless, 8 treatments performed in our office twice a week for 4 weeks. Many patients report a noticeable improvement of their ability to achieve an erection within a few weeks.
There is finally enough clinical data to support our offering this treatment. Our machine is the one that has been used in the trials that have had significant results.
At this time, insurance companies do not cover this treatment. You may use your HSA to cover costs. Treatment cost is $3200.
Many treatments are covered by insurance so your out of pocket costs may be limited.
